Bram's count

Bram keeps a remembered tally of occasions when living creatures stop together and face one distant direction. The place drawing their attention offers him nothing visible to identify, and the morning's occurrence adds another instance to his total.

Keeping count

Source chapters: Chapter 3

He begins this counting without making a deliberate decision to do so. The account locates the tally in his memory, and Bram recognises the morning's interruption as something that happens repeatedly rather than an isolated occurrence.

Bram's explanations

Source chapters: Chapter 3

For the first occurrence, Bram considers a storm sensed at a distance as an explanation. For the second, he considers a huge beast beyond the hills, close enough to inspire fear despite remaining beyond hearing. Bram now doubts both explanations and has no replacement for them. While watching the grazers after his return, he wonders what repeatedly draws all their attention toward something that remains invisible to him.
