Chapter 2

Ferro asks Goro whether he wants to hear about an unbeaten side and says he once watched it while travelling in his youth. He places it beyond Cart Road, far across the Quarter, and reports an exceptionally long history without defeat. In Ferro's account, these players neither shout nor argue and appear to move without calling to each other. He describes their coordination as resembling one body and one mind, with each part anticipating the actions of every other part. Ferro says he never once saw this side misplace a ball and describes watching it as both beautiful and cold. He recalls being glad to leave, without being able to explain why, and his voice becomes quieter during the account.
