Low Quilt on a market-day afternoon: a strip of mended dirt between the dye-works and the canal, an iron ring at each end, and the patchwork town beyond.

Low Quilt

The Quilt Quarter measures people by their abilities with a ball, but victory matters more than the range of skills they possess. Goro's speed and judgement earn praise without securing the standing reserved for players who deliver the decisive result. The narration describes the Quarter as clear rather than cruel in its distinctions between scorers and other players, winners and losers. Goro experiences the label promising as praise that also leaves his eventual worth unsettled.

Look and land

The neighbourhoods each regard themselves as central and have individual colours, grievances, playing areas, and teams. Most residents are poor, but the account describes success on a market day as a different kind of wealth available through a victorious side. The Tannery lanes appear grey with soot, while the Spindle blocks are characterised by white washing lines. Cart Road forms a lengthy brown patch among the neighbourhoods visible from above, each extending outward as part of the Quarter's patchwork. The Low Quilt players use a rough strip beside the canal, behind the dye works, as their ground. Bent iron rings stand at opposite ends, and neighbours watch from a low wall that fills when market day brings a game.

The canal catches the late afternoon colour beneath the dye works roofs during the match. As evening deepens, insects rise from its water, and the rings become dark outlines against the remaining light above the deserted playing area.

Life and customs

Goro's side is Low Quilt, and local people call its players the Sparrows because of their patched clothing and scrappy size disadvantage. Their blue and grey clothing differs from the red worn by the larger opponents from Cart Road. At the end of market day, the stalls along the upper edge of the ground are folded away and the smells of fried food and tar fade. Bench blankets are gathered, dogs search the disturbed grass, and neighbours drift away toward their evening meals. Departures after a victory include singing and boasts, while a defeat produces a quiet, considerate dispersal. The neighbourhood responds to Goro's missed final chance with a shared sigh and forgiveness, a response that he finds painful.

Chapter 2

Chapter Two follows Goro during a loss to Cart Road and afterward as he remains beside the ground. Tamsin arrives from his own match with the boys' side beyond the tanyard, and Ferro, a former Low Quilt player, sits with them. Ferro reports seeing an unbeaten team far across the Quarter beyond Cart Road during his youthful travels. He describes players moving in extraordinary coordination and recalls both the beauty and cold quality of their play, without explaining his relief at leaving. Goro practises alone beneath a tin lamp at the dye works gate after Tamsin leaves. While the Quarter settles into meals, arguments, and sleep, the canal, insects, lamp, and bouncing ball provide the sounds around his repeated attempts.

The final scene shows Goro looking beyond the lamplight toward unfamiliar neighbourhoods and resolving to seek the side Ferro describes. He eventually carries his ball back through neighbourhoods now sleeping, still wanting the skill that he associates with those distant players.

  • Ferro. Ferro is a former Low Quilt player whose playing years precede Goro's birth. He now watches from the benches with other older spectators, and the boys give only partial attention to his repeated recollections of earlier days.
  • Tamsin. Tamsin is Goro's friend and comes to sit with him after the Sparrows lose. He arrives from his own match with the boys' side beyond the tanyard and offers company beside the emptied playing area.
