The canal and the dye-works

The canal runs along one side of the Sparrows' playing area, and the rear of the dye works faces it from the other side. During the afternoon match, amber light falls across the roofs and gives the canal's surface a bronze appearance.

Evening

Source chapters: Chapter 2

Goro retrieves the ball from weeds near the canal after the final missed chance. As spectators leave in the evening, insects rise from the water and the smell of tar from the dye works fades alongside the scent of fried dough.

The lamp

Source chapters: Chapter 2

A tin lamp hangs from a pole beside the dye works gate and casts a small, uneven pool of light onto the dirt. Its buzzing accompanies the canal and nearby insects while Goro remains on the ground with his ball. Goro uses the edge of this light for repeated attempts at the move that fails during the match. Later he pauses with a foot on the ball, looks across the illuminated dirt toward the dark Quarter, and eventually leaves carrying the ball.
