The Sparrows' ground

An iron ring rises at either end of the ground, with bends attributed to long exposure to weather and thrown balls. During market day, the watching wall fills, and stalls operate along the upper edge of the playing area.

The match against Cart Road ends here when Goro's attempt rebounds from the ring and the whistle sounds. After the defeat, the neighbours gradually leave for supper while Goro remains seated with his ball resting between his feet. Tamsin and Ferro sit with Goro on the wall as darkness gathers. After Tamsin leaves, Goro remains beside the dye works gate, using the small area illuminated by a tin lamp while the rest of the ground is dark.
